  1. Hanoi House °°°°°°

  2. Atoboy °°°°°°°*

Modern but approachable Korean food in a relatively affordable prix-fixe menu at the precursor to Atomix (now I want to go even more than before!) Very compelling flavours in the small dishes, rounded out by the mains, where the rice and kimchi were unexpectedly the stars.

  3. Nakaji °°°°°°°*

Excellence in (nearly) everything, as you’d expect—the classics with some surprises.

  4. Le Gratin °°°°°°

  5. Double Chicken Please °°°°°°°

I did not expect the drinks to actually taste like what they’re named.

  6. Ivan Ramen °°°°°°

Solid except the broth was way too salty this time. I feel like revisiting some of these “favourites” places has not been going well…

  7. Piggyback by Pig & Khao °°°°

  8. Overstory °°°°°°°*

Hard to get into but the drinks (and maybe the view?) are worth it.

  9. The Noortwyck °°°°°°°

Good vibes for brunch. Execution and polish felt lacking — split hollandaise reminded me of The Menu.

  10. Great NY Noodletown °°°°°

  11. The Bar Room at The Modern °°°°°°°

Slightly disappointing that the “stick to appies” rule seems to apply here, but if you do, you won’t be disappointed. Highlights: the tarte flambée, the bread, and the washroom.

  12. NONONO °°°°°°

It’s okay. Skewers weren’t as good as I remembered them being, a bit under-seasoned. Fairly good value (soba bowl, hamachi, steak) but not worth trekking out for. Service is slow and desserts come in an obviously pre-made jar.

  13. Memory Corner °°°°°°

  14. Nemesis Coffee (GNW) °°°°°°°

  15. Quality Eats °°°°°°

  16. Marta °°°°°

  17. Cafe Select °°°°

  18. Chito Gvrito °°°°°

  19. Pocha 32 °°°°°°

  20. Niche Niche °°°°°°°

  21. Jongro BBQ °°°°°

  22. Rubirosa °°°°°°

  23. HK BBQ Master °°°°°°°

  24. Blue Water Cafe °°°°°°°

  25. Mott 32 (Vancouver) °°°°°°

  26. Menya Itto (Vancouver) °°°°°°

  27. Hundy °°°°°°

  28. Tasty BBQ & Beer Bar °°°°°

  29. Quanjude (Vancouver) °°°°°°

  30. Au Comptoir °°°°°°°**

    I won’t shut up about…

  31. Botanist °°°°°°°*

  32. Ask for Luigi °°°°°°

  33. AnnaLena °°°°°°°

  34. Kissa Tanto °°°°°°°*

  35. Stonemill Matcha °°°°°°°*

  36. State Bird Provisions °°°°°°°

Creative (but not out of the ordinary) small plates are served from dim-sum-style carts.

  37. Lafayette °°°°°°

  38. Family Meal at Blue Hill °°°°°°°*

An ultra-seasonal tasting menu served family-style (fun!)

  39. The Dolar Shop (Manhattan) °°°°°°

  40. Locanda Verde °°°°°°

  41. LaoJie Hotpot (Manhattan) °°°°°°

All-you-can-eat hotpot is always fun! The service can be inattentive, but the milk tea pudding dessert more than makes up for it.

  42. Bar Moga °°°°°

  43. Xi’an Famous Foods °°°°°°

Noodles and noodle-adjacent food at this New York City staple. A tad overpriced these days, but still tasty. NS4 (Stewed Pork Hand-Ripped Noodles in Soup) has become my go-to, with a slightly tangy soup base that balances out the noodles and pork.

  44. Chambers °°°°°°°*

A small and sleek neighbourhood restaurant in Tribeca serving up well-considered seasonal dishes. The food here isn’t extremely inspired but it is very satisfying, and there’s a great selection of drinks to accompany dinner—mostly wine, having been a wine bar previously.

  45. Grand Street Skewer Cart °°°°°°°

Great for a snack! Add a crispy bun skewer and a veggie skewer to make it a meal.

  46. Yakitori Torishin °°°°°

Don’t expect anything amazing if you’re at a table. Go to Grand Street Skewer Cart instead. (Kono and Torien are still on my list!)

  47. Rule of Thirds °°°°°°°*

Walking here from the train, it’s impossible to ignore the hipster–industrial vibe of this area in Greenpoint: a vintage thrift store; a record shop; a very modern-Zen dashi specialty store (that’s worth stopping by!)

  48. Baekjeong °°°°°°°

It gets a bit pricey when you’re ordering 4 pitchers of soju, but who’s keeping track?

  49. Dimes °°°°

  50. L’Abeille °°°°°°°**

That feeling of dérangement is so rare and is such a fleeting memory, but you’ll never forget where you found it, and you’ll never stop wanting to go back, to try finding it again.

  51. Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles °°°°°°

A good place to go if you want some noodle soup, I guess.

  52. Dokodemo °°°°°

I can see the appeal of a “value prop” place but somehow it’s not quite satisfying enough?

  53. Jacob’s Pickles °°°°°°°

  54. Dame °°°°°°°

  55. Menkoi Sato °°°°

  56. Gunbae °°°°°°

  57. Sugarfish (Midtown East) °°°°°

Not horrible value, and the fish was ok, but the execution is not up to what you’d get at an actual omakase place—the rice seasoning, texture, and temperature were all a bit off.

  58. Ramen Ishida °°°°°°°*

  59. Daisies °°°°°°°

  60. Mama Pho °°°°°

The only thing worth calling out is that we got the egg custard tarts for 1 cent.

  61. Hay Hay Roasted °°°°°

  62. Frenchette °°°°°°°*

Creative French bistro fare in a warm and refined setting. The standouts are in the “Amuses” section (country ham and melon with pickled chanterelles), but the entrées are done well (duck confit, a classic) and won’t be disappointing. They’re known for the duck frites, which wasn’t on the menu when I went for dinner (next time!)

  63. Tonchin °°°°°°°*

  64. El Condor Coffee Roasters °°°°°°°*

  65. Momofuku Noodle Bar (East Village) °°°°°°

Fairly solid ramen and bao at this East Village institution (they were celebrating 18 years when I visited!) The menu is on the expensive side though, and I wish it had more variety and customization apart from the rotating specials.

  66. Au Cheval °°°°°°

  67. Momoya (SoHo) °°°°°°°*

  68. Marufuku Ramen °°°°°°

  69. Mighties °°°°°°

  70. Ise °°°°°°°*

    Simple but amazing soba noodles.

  71. Ichibantei °°°°°°

  72. Crown Shy °°°°°°°

  73. Manhatta °°°°°°

  74. Ivan Ramen °°°°°°°*

  75. Ramen Danbo (West Village) °°°°°°°*

So consistently good, surprisingly not busy at all being nestled in West Village. Reminds me of dark rainy days back home.

  76. Cocoron °°°°°°

  77. Burger Joint °°°°

Good but not worth the long wait. A new outpost just opened up at the Moynihan Train Hall this year, so it could be worth trying that next time.

  78. Nakamura °°°°°°

  79. Jun-Men Ramen Bar °°°°

  80. Sushi Nakazawa °°°°°°°

Fish and sushi were great, service and ambiance was cold and uptight (or maybe it was me?)

  81. BBF °°°°°°°*

Great ambiance and service in an almost-empty restaurant (one other group came in while I was there—though there’s also an omakase bar in the back that I didn’t get to check out). The chirashi is a steal at $19, and there’s a nice sake selection to pair.

  82. Mr. Taka Ramen °°°°°

  83. Nara Sushi °°

My expectations weren’t even that high coming to this neighbourhood sushi spot.

  84. Shinsen °°°

  85. Kuu Ramen °°°°°

Average ramen and donburi spot in FiDi.

  86. NONONO °°°°°°°*

  87. Chuko °°°°°°

  88. Shake Shack (Fulton Center) °°°°°

A well-executed fast food burger and fries. Still, not as good as Super Duper in SF.

  89. Raku °°°°°°°*

Tasty broth and noodles in a minimal-chic (as the Google Maps entry accurately describes) atmosphere. Maybe a little overpriced. They give you a frozen grape at the end though.

  90. Momofuku Ssäm Bar °°°°°°
